Thriyv: Before Treatment Information Sheet – Hypoxic Therapy (Thin Air System)
Purpose
This guide provides key information to help you prepare for your upcoming Hypoxic Therapy session at Thriyv. Please read it carefully and contact us if you have any questions before your appointment.
About the Treatment
Hypoxic Therapy using the Thin Air System (Adaptive Altitude) is a wellness treatment that simulates high-altitude conditions by reducing the oxygen concentration in the air you breathe. This form of intermittent hypoxic therapy (IHT) helps the body adapt to lower oxygen levels, promoting improved cardiovascular health, metabolic efficiency, and physical performance. The system safely controls oxygen levels, allowing you to benefit from altitude-based training within a comfortable clinical environment.
Expected Benefits
- Enhanced cardiovascular and respiratory function.
- Improved energy levels and endurance.
- Support for weight management and metabolism.
- Potential benefits for sleep, mood, and cognitive clarity.
- General wellbeing enhancement through cellular adaptation.
How the Procedure Works
During treatment, you will sit or recline comfortably while wearing a breathing mask connected to the Thin Air hypoxic generator. The system alternates between low-oxygen (hypoxic) and normal-oxygen (normoxic) air cycles to train your body’s response to oxygen variation.
Sessions typically last between 30–45 minutes. Your clinician will monitor your oxygen saturation (SpO₂) throughout using a pulse oximeter to ensure safety and optimal results.
Treatment Course
A standard course consists of 15 sessions performed 3–5 times per week over 2–4 weeks. Maintenance sessions can then be completed as required to support ongoing performance and wellbeing goals.
Medical and Consent Requirements
Before your appointment, you will need to complete a Medical History and Consent Form. Your Thriyv clinician will assess your health status and measure your baseline oxygen levels and blood pressure to confirm suitability. Please disclose any medical conditions, recent illnesses, or medications that may affect your breathing or cardiovascular function.
Contraindications (When Treatment Cannot Proceed)
- Hypoxic Therapy is not suitable for clients who:
- Are pregnant or breastfeeding.
- Have had a recent heart attack (within 3 months) or stroke (within 6 months).
- Have unstable angina or severe cardiovascular disease.
- Have uncontrolled hypertension or severe respiratory disorders (e.g., advanced COPD, sleep apnoea).
- Have severe anaemia or blood disorders.
- Have acute infection, fever, or systemic illness.
- Have intolerance to hypoxia (oxygen saturation <92% at baseline).
- If you are unsure about your suitability, please contact the clinic prior to your session.
Possible Side Effects
Mild dizziness, headache, or shortness of breath can occasionally occur during adaptation to lower oxygen levels. These effects are temporary and will be monitored by your clinician. Rarely, individuals may experience fatigue following their first few sessions as the body adjusts to hypoxic conditioning.
How to Prepare for Your Appointment
- Stay well-hydrated and avoid alcohol or caffeine for at least 6 hours prior to treatment.
- Eat a light meal 1–2 hours before your session.
- Avoid high-intensity exercise immediately before your appointment.
- Wear comfortable clothing suitable for relaxation.
- Inform your clinician if you feel unwell or have experienced any changes in your health since your last visit.
