Before you book, you want to know what to expect in the room. At Thriyv, a CQC-registered doctor-led clinic led by Dr Callum Shields MBChB/MRCS at 14–16 Whitworth Street, Manchester M1 3BS, pressotherapy is sequential compression. You are screened first. Then you lie down in a full-body suit connected to a Zemits console for a timed cycle. It is lymphatic support, not a salon add-on and not a weight-loss programme. Individual results vary.
This page is the walkthrough: how you arrive, what you wear, what the suit actually does, and who should wait. Service detail sits on our lymphatic drainage massage therapy page. The longer science write-up already lives on our lymphatic drainage Manchester article; this page will not clone it. Consultation first.
What happens in a pressotherapy session
You are not walked straight onto the bed. A clinician-designed intake comes first: medical history, why you have booked, and whether compression is appropriate that day. If it is not, we stop. Consent is signed before the suit is zipped. Protocols sit under Dr Callum Shields. Thriyv is a CQC-registered clinic, not a high-street spa with a pair of boots in the corner.
If you are cleared, you change in a private area. The garment is a full-body, multi-chamber suit covering the legs, hips, abdomen, and arms, not a boots-only sleeve. Air hoses clip from the Zemits console to the chambers. You lie on the treatment bed. The console runs a timed cycle.
Chambers inflate and deflate in sequence. Most people describe a firm, moving squeeze that travels from the extremities toward the trunk. It should feel contained, not crushing. You stay still and breathe normally. You can rest or close your eyes. There is no therapist working the tissue by hand during the cycle, and there is no applicator cooling fat.
When the console reaches zero, the suit comes off and you dress. Some people feel a lighter or less puffy quality in the legs or midsection. Some notice they want the loo as moved fluid is processed. That is a comfort note, not a result claim. Drink water. Walk out when you are ready. Desk work is usually fine the same day. We do not photograph you on the bed and call it proof.

What should I wear?
Wear something that sits smoothly under the suit. Light sportswear or underwear is what most people choose. Thick seams, zips, buttons, and bulky waistbands press into the skin once the chambers fill. Jeans and structured dresses are a poor fit. You will not need gym shoes on the bed.
We provide a private changing area, towels, and robes. Jewellery that sits under a strap can come off for comfort. If you are unsure, bring a plain T-shirt and shorts. We will sort the rest at the clinic.

Is it a weight-loss treatment?
No. Pressotherapy is not a weight-loss programme. Sequential compression can move fluid. It does not remove fat cells, replace energy balance, or treat visceral fat around the organs. A lighter feel in a waistband after a session is usually fluid, not fat, and we will not dress it up as one.
It can help some people feel less tight or heavy, because the cycle is a way of moving fluid and encouraging the tissue to settle. That is comfort and recovery, not a guaranteed remodel. We will not quote a decongestion percentage. We will not tell you the suit detoxes you or that toxins leave the body on a timetable. Individual results vary.
If the scales are the real goal, say so at consultation so we can point you away from the wrong booking. Fat freezing and EMS are different tools with different jobs. This page is about the suit and the console only.
How often can you have it?
There is no honest one-size diary. Frequency is a consultation decision. It depends on why you came, how you tolerate compression, and whether a clinician still thinks another visit is useful. We will not invent a course, a weekly package, or a minimum set of sessions on this page.
Some people book once and stop. Some come back because the first visit was comfortable and the goal is maintenance. Post-surgical timing, if relevant, is set with surgeon clearance, not a blog timetable. If a plan is appropriate, it is written after we have seen you.
What are the side effects?
The usual effects are a squeezing or pulsing pressure, warmth where the suit sits, pink skin when it comes off, and sometimes a need to use the toilet afterwards. Strap marks can show for a short time. Feeling light-headed if you stand too quickly is a reason to sit, not to push on. These are expected sensations, not a result.
Pressotherapy is not for everyone. Active infection, known or suspected deep vein thrombosis, uncontrolled heart failure, severe varicose veins, and pregnancy are among the reasons a clinician may say no. Recent surgery, implanted devices, and some circulatory problems need a proper history. If anything in the intake is unclear, we delay.
Pain that worsens after you leave, new one-sided calf swelling, chest pain, or breathlessness is not ordinary settling. Contact the clinic or urgent care as appropriate. Call 0161 566 5099 or email info@thriyv.co.uk if you are unsure whether you should wait.
Frequently asked questions
Does pressotherapy really work?
It can support comfort and fluid movement in people who are suitable for compression. It is not a guaranteed body change, not a detox, and not a substitute for medical care. Individual results vary. We explain what the suit can and cannot do at consultation, then only proceed if screening is clear.
What should I wear to a pressotherapy session?
Light sportswear or underwear without thick seams, zips, or buttons. The suit needs a smooth layer underneath. Thriyv provides a private changing area, towels, and a robe. You do not need to buy specialist clothing.
Is pressotherapy good for weight loss?
No. It is not a weight-loss programme and it does not remove fat cells. Any short-term change in how clothes sit is usually fluid, not fat. If weight is your goal, say so at consultation so we can steer you to the right conversation.
How often should I do pressotherapy?
As often as a clinician decides after screening, not as a number copied from a menu. We will not invent a weekly or multi-session course here. If a return visit is useful, that is agreed after we have assessed why you came and how you responded.
Is pressotherapy better than massage?
They are different tools. Pressotherapy delivers a consistent, full-body pneumatic cycle. Manual lymphatic work is better when a therapist needs to follow a mapped, local pathway. One is not universally better. We choose after screening.
What are the benefits of pressotherapy?
In suitable people, the honest benefits are comfort and support: a chance to move fluid, ease a heavy-leg feel after travel or a desk week, and add a repeatable recovery session under clinical governance. It will not detox you, flatten a midsection that is mainly a weight issue, or guarantee skin change. Full service context sits on our lymphatic drainage page.
How much does pressotherapy cost?
We will not invent a public price here or quote a deposit. Current availability and fees sit on Fresha. A consultation can confirm whether the suit is the right booking before you spend. Call 0161 566 5099 or use the enquiry form below if you want to ask first.
What are the side effects of pressotherapy?
Expect pressure, warmth, temporary pink skin, and sometimes needing the toilet afterwards. Seam marks can show briefly. It is not suitable with active infection, DVT, uncontrolled heart failure, severe varicose veins, or pregnancy, and a clinician may decline other cases after history-taking. Worsening pain, breathlessness, or new one-sided calf swelling after a session should be reviewed.
