Knowing how to prepare for a blood test makes the morning appointment simpler and helps the laboratory get a clean sample. At Thriyv, Dr Callum Shields, MBChB, LLM, MPhil, MRCS (ENT) leads a CQC-registered clinic for diagnostic and screening procedures at 14–16 Whitworth Street, Manchester M1 3BS.
This guide sticks to the prep steps we publish on our blood testing in Manchester page: overnight fasting in most cases, a morning booking before 11am, water is fine, a medicines and supplements list, and loose sleeves for a venous draw in clinic. You receive a written results pack afterwards. Suitability is confirmed with you before you book.
Why preparation for a blood test matters
Several markers are most reliable when measured in the morning and after fasting. A short, clear plan for how to prepare for a blood test reduces last-minute rearranging. Thriyv takes a full venous sample in clinic rather than a postal finger-prick kit, then our partner UK laboratory analyses it. Your pack explains every marker in plain English and sets out practical guidance where something would benefit from attention.
Thriyv is CQC registered for diagnostic and screening procedures only. This is a structured wellbeing and screening service, not urgent or emergency care. If you have urgent symptoms, contact your GP or NHS 111, or call 999 in an emergency.
Overnight fasting and morning booking
In most cases, please fast overnight and book before 11am. Have nothing to eat before your appointment. We do not publish a fixed hour count beyond overnight fasting, because that is the wording on our live blood testing page. If you book a later slot, one of our team will contact you to move it to a morning appointment.
The clinic opens at 10:00 from Tuesday to Sunday and is closed on Mondays. Please contact us before booking if you need the earliest morning slot and we will find one for you.
Can you drink water before a fasting blood test?
Yes. Water is fine before a fasting blood test, and drinking some helps make the blood draw easier. Stick to water unless the clinical team tells you otherwise when you book.
Medicines, supplements and what to bring
Bring a list of anything you take regularly — prescription medicines and supplements. Tell us about them and we will advise you if anything needs to change before your test. Do not stop a prescribed medicine on your own. Wear something with loose sleeves so we can reach your arm easily.
Checklist: overnight fast in most cases, morning slot before 11am, water OK, medicines and supplements list, loose sleeves, in-clinic venous sample.
At the clinic: venous blood test, not a home finger-prick kit
A trained clinician takes a full venous sample at our Whitworth Street clinic — the same method NHS and hospital labs use. Home finger-prick kits posted back in an envelope are prone to haemolysis, clotting and under-filled tubes, which cause failed samples and repeat orders. A proper venous draw gives the laboratory a clean, full-volume sample. There is no posting and no re-dos from a postal kit pathway.
Gentle aftercare after your blood draw
After the sample is taken, keep the dressing on as advised and follow any simple aftercare given on the day. Most people continue with normal plans once they leave. If you feel unwell, tell the team before you go, or contact the clinic, your GP, NHS 111, or 999 if it is urgent.
Your written blood test results pack
You do not just get a printout of numbers. After laboratory analysis, you receive a structured written results pack built around three things:
- Every marker, laid out — a full breakdown of every measurement, grouped by system, with your figure against the lab range.
- Explained in plain English — what each marker measures, why it matters, and what your number indicates, written to be understood without a medical degree.
- Practical guidance — where a marker would benefit from attention, clear guidance on what to consider changing, so you can act and compare future results against this baseline.
If anything in your results warrants clinical attention, we say so clearly and set out the appropriate next step, including optional follow-up with our clinical team or referral back to your GP where that is the right route. Marker-by-marker interpretation sits with Dr Callum Shields and the clinical team; this guide explains how the pack is laid out.

What time should I book a blood test?
Blood tests are generally booked before 11am, because several markers are most reliable when measured in the morning and after fasting. The clinic opens at 10:00 Tuesday to Sunday and is closed on Mondays. Later slots are rearranged to a morning appointment.
What should I bring to my blood test appointment?

How is a clinic venous blood test different from a home finger-prick kit?
Trained clinic staff take a full venous sample in clinic — the standard clinical method for accurate results — rather than a home finger-prick kit posted back in an envelope. You also get a written pack that explains what your numbers mean and what to do about them, instead of a portal full of raw figures.
How do I get my blood test results at Thriyv?
You receive a comprehensive written results pack: every marker measured, an explanation of each in plain English, and practical guidance where something would benefit from attention. If anything warrants clinical attention, we say so clearly and set out the appropriate next step — including optional follow-up with our clinical team where that is appropriate.
