Before you book, you want to know what an EMS muscle toning session feels like. At Thriyv, a CQC-registered doctor-led clinic led by Dr Callum Shields, MBChB, LLM, MPhil, MRCS (ENT) at 14–16 Whitworth Street, Manchester M1 3BS, this is an abdomen session on EMshape Neo after screening. It is not a gym class and not a fat-freezing cycle. Individual results vary.

This page is the walkthrough: how you arrive, what sits on the abdomen, what the contractions feel like, and who should wait. Service detail sits on our EMS muscle toning and fat reduction page. Consultation first.

What happens in an EMS muscle toning session

You are not walked straight onto the bed. A clinician-designed intake comes first: medical history, why you have booked, and whether an abdomen session is appropriate that day. If it is not, we stop. Consent is signed before an applicator goes on. Protocols sit under Dr Callum Shields. Thriyv is a CQC-registered clinic, not a high-street gym with a belt in the corner.

If you are cleared, you change in a private area. Clothing needs to let an applicator sit flat on the midsection. Close-fitting sportswear is what most people choose. Thick seams, zips, and metal hardware in the treatment zone are a poor fit. You lie on the treatment bed. A paddle applicator is placed on the abdomen and held with a strap. The console in this room is EMshape Neo. Emsculpt is a well-known name in this family of treatments. We use EMshape Neo, not Emsculpt, as the device. That is a naming fact, not a ranking.

The console runs a timed programme. You stay still. You can breathe normally. Most people rest or talk. There is no gym set, no cooling of fat, and no pelvic applicator on this booking. Pelvic floor work is a separate pelvic floor EMS session. When the programme ends, the strap comes off and you dress. Desk work is usually fine the same day. We do not photograph you on the bed and call it proof.

What does it feel like?

The honest sensation is strong, involuntary contractions in the muscle under the applicator. It builds as the programme runs. It should feel intense and contained, not like a cut or a burn. If it does, say so. Intensity is adjusted in the room, not left as a test of grit.

Some people describe a deep, pulsing tightness across the abdomen. Some notice the muscle fluttering in a way they cannot copy on a mat. You are not doing sit-ups. The device is driving the contraction. That is also why this is not sold here as a gym substitute: the feel is stimulation, not a workout plan, and we will not translate it into crunch counts or hours in a studio.

Afterwards the midsection can feel worked: warmth, a tired tightness, sometimes a dull ache later in the day. That after-feel is not a result and not a promise that tone has changed. Drink water. Walk out when you are ready. Worsening pain, dizziness that does not settle, or anything that feels wrong is a reason to contact the clinic.

Does it remove belly fat?

No. Not as the job of this session. In suitable people, electromagnetic stimulation can drive a strong contraction in the muscle under the applicator. Some clients later describe a firmer or more switched-on feel in the abdomen. Those are tone observations. They are not a guaranteed outline, and they are not the same as losing pinchable fat.

Tone and pinchable fat are different problems. An applicator on the abdomen is there to work muscle. If that comparison is why you are here, the honest duration piece is our how long fat freezing lasts article, not this walkthrough. We do not make deeper belly-fat claims. Individual results vary.

It is also not a gym. We will not say it replaces training, and we will not dress a session up as a week of classes. If the real goal is strength, a programme, or a number on the scales, say so at consultation so we can steer you away from the wrong booking.

How soon can you judge a change?

There is no honest day-three reveal. Muscle that has been stimulated can feel different before it looks different, and a mirror in the changing room is a poor scoreboard. We will not promise a week-by-week timeline, and we will not tell you that one visit is a course.

One session is not a course. Many people ask whether a single appointment is enough. It is a first data point: how you tolerate the applicator, whether the abdomen was the right site, and whether a clinician still thinks another visit is useful. A plan, if there is one, is written after screening and review, not copied from a menu.

If someone quotes a packaged number of visits before they have seen you, that is a sales plan, not a protocol. At Thriyv the diary is a consultation decision. Book via Fresha when you want a date, or ask at consultation if you are not sure the abdomen session is the right tool.

What are the downsides?

The usual downsides are the intensity in the room and the tired, sometimes sore, feel afterwards. Redness where the strap sat can show for a short time. That is expected sensation, not an emergency, and it is a poor moment to judge whether the session worked.

Stop signs matter more than comfort notes. Do not book, or expect us to treat, in pregnancy. Implanted electronic devices, metal in the treatment area, and certain cardiac or neurological histories are reasons a clinician may say no. Recent surgery, active illness in the area, and an abdomen that is mainly a weight or visceral-fat problem need a proper history. If the intake is unclear, we delay. A CQC-registered clinic will decline an unsafe booking.

Pain that worsens after you leave, chest symptoms, or faintness that does not settle is not ordinary. Contact the clinic or urgent care as appropriate. Screening is not skipped because you have had a similar device elsewhere. Call 0161 566 5099 or email info@thriyv.co.uk if you are unsure whether you should wait.

Frequently asked questions

Does EMS muscle toning actually work?

It can drive a strong contraction in the muscle under the applicator in people who are suitable for an abdomen session. Some later describe a firmer feel. That is not a guaranteed tone, not a gym substitute, and not a fat-removal promise. Suitability is confirmed at screening. Individual results vary. We will not quote a success rate.

How quickly do you see results with EMS training?

Judge over a review, not over a lunch break. The abdomen can feel worked the same day. Visible change, if it comes, is not an overnight outline. We will not promise a set number of weeks. One session is not a course. A clinician sets the checkpoint after seeing you.

Can you see results after 1 Emsculpt?

One session is not a course. Thriyv uses EMshape Neo, not Emsculpt, as the device. The question is the same: a single visit tells us how you tolerate the applicator, not whether a midsection is done. We will not promise a transformation from one appointment. Individual results vary. Consultation first.

Does EMS remove belly fat?

Not as the job of this session. The applicator is there to work muscle. Tone and pinchable fat are different problems. If you are comparing the two, read how long fat freezing lasts rather than treating this walkthrough as a fat-loss essay. Individual results vary. Screening first.

What are the disadvantages of EMS training?

Expect intense contractions, a tired or sore midsection afterwards, and a wait before anyone should judge tone. It is not a gym, not guaranteed, and not suitable for everyone. A clinician may decline treatment. Pregnancy, implanted electronic devices, and metal in the area are common stop signs. Results vary.

Does EMS burn calories?

This is not a calorie-counting session and we will not quote a calorie-burn figure. The programme stimulates muscle under the applicator. It is not an aerobics class and not a substitute for energy balance. If the scales are the real goal, say so at consultation so we do not put you on the wrong device.

Can EMS increase muscle size?

It can support tone in suitable people. That is not a guarantee of size and not a set percentage. We will not quote muscle-gain figures. Individual results vary. Any change is judged at review after screening, not from a single photograph on the bed.
